10 Critically Acclaimed Movies Of All Times

Hey everyone,

What’s up? How is everything going?
As much as I like reading, I love watching movies/TV shows as well. I was recently watching The Shawshank Redemption again and I thought of compiling the 10 critically acclaimed movies that I have watched till now. Feel free to add your own to this list (and don’t forget to share it with me!).

10 Critically Acclaimed Movies Of All Times

Shawshank Redemption

Critically Acclaimed Movies Shawshank Redemption

“Fear can hold you prisoner. But hope can set you free”. The Shawshank Redemption is one of the best movies I have ever seen. And what a brilliant one. I have lost count of the number of times I have watched this. Brilliant script, acting, direction, narration, cinematography and to think that it was made in 1994? Wow. Morgan Freeman looks EXACTLY the same even now. Not sure how he does it, if only his anti-aging secrets were spilled. Sigh! This movie gets me going every time I start to talk about it. Even if you haven’t watched any of the movie in this list, please just watch this one. ‘nough said.

The Silence Of The Lambs

Critically Acclaimed Movies Silence of the lambs

The Silence Of The Lambs was the first creepy movie I saw I think. I just wish I had read the book first. But I doubt that the movie is any less than the book (I hardly say this!). It was one of the most critically acclaimed movies of its times (1991). Its a pure psychological thriller that gets to your nerves, makes you think, creeps you out, all at the same time. Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins are at their best in this. No wonder this movie won Academy Awards in all the top 5 categories. If you are game for it, go watch it. I still get a little jittery when I watch this. You will be exposed to one other awesome genre of movies (and a great bunch of actors as well).

Inception

Critically Acclaimed Movies Inception

You will find a lot of Christopher Nolan and Leonardo Di Caprio’s movies in this list. I admire both of them very much. Nolan is a director who has the capability to expand his horizons to beyond and more! And Di Caprio does the same with his acting. Of course the combination HAS to be a killer. There are lovers and haters for this movie but the way Nolan has implemented his ideas was a treat to watch. This movie perfectly shows that it takes a TEAM to do a great movie. In spite of being a highly commercial movie, this was one of the top critically acclaimed movies when it was released (2010).

Shutter Island

Shutter Island

See, I told you. I can’t see enough of Di Caprio. I found Shutter Island movie very confusing, creepy and I sure was scratching my head trying to figure out what happened at the end! I had to watch it AGAIN to confirm that I was indeed confused. It takes all one has to come up with such an entwined, yet good script. And I just wish again that I had read the book first. Once you watch the movie version of it, you won’t have the same excitement to read the book. Know what I mean? Anyway, its a good watch indeed, especially if you are a fan of Di Caprio and his brilliant acting.

Catch Me If You Can

Catch Me If You Can

My bad, I will try not to get one more movie of his in this list. Otherwise you might think I’m biased towards Di Caprio (Well, can’t help it). Catch Me If You Can is a real story of a guy named Frank Abagnale who, before his 19th birthday, successfully committed frauds worth millions of dollars. He was excellent at switching his identities (read: impersonating) and was very well known for his skills in forgery. One other best part of the movie along with Di Caprio starring and a great story like this? Having Tom Hanks do the detective role in it! Icing on the top. A brilliant movie if you haven’t watched yet.

Memento

Memento

I told you Christopher Nolan would make appearance(s) again. Memento must have demanded everything from Nolan that a good director is expected to possess. The one thing that would make you admire the movie is its narration (apart from the splendid acting, direction, editing and the list goes on). This is one other such movie where you sure as hell would scratch your head again. But don’t lose heart and watch it again, many doubts of yours will get clarified! I’m kinda insecure to watch the movie once more, what if I have forgotten what  (and how) was the movie like (Pun intended again).

The Prestige

Prestige

Yes yes, I get it, but I can’t stop myself from including this one. I feel Nolan has been completely lucky in his career to get chances back-to-back to direct such brilliant movies (And he is only 45! I know!). Well, not a complete shocker, considering the fact that his brother is a brilliant writer (and just 40 years old! How are they doing it). Coming to the movie, The Prestige, for starters, stars, Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale and Michael Caine (Yes, yes, Batman’s butler). Isn’t it already good enough for you to watch? Its an amazing thriller movie that you shouldn’t miss watching. Do watch it this weekend if you haven’t!

The Dark Knight

Dark Knight

Okay, this is the last one of Nolan’s. I promise. But come on, you know you don’t blame me for including The Dark Knight here (In fact, you would have already judged me for not including this at the top). Being a highly commercial one, this was one of the most critically acclaimed movies of all times. It was very well received by viewers and critics. I had least expectations from this movie when I watched it (This was the first movie that I watched in the Batman Trilogy). But boy-oh-boy was I glad that I did. The best part of the movie for me was NOT Nolan’s direction (it was brilliant), NOT Bale’s acting (it was beyond amazing), it was the Heath Ledger‘s character as The Joker. Heath Ledger received posthumous Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for this role. In face, if we hadn’t seen villains as “supporting actors”, he would have definitely been awarded the best actor. Its truly an extraordinary movie. I became a fan of Nolan after this movie. And I’m so glad he ended the trilogy with Dark Knight Rises, who knows how much of the expectations would the series have kept had they kept on going? I’m really, really, thankful for that choice Nolan made.

Forrest Gump

Forrest Gump

I watched Forrest Gump when I was in college. It was the one of the top critically acclaimed movies in the year of its release and grossed more than $600 million worldwide. Its about a boy, with a low IQ to start with, and his life. Its a beautiful romantic-drama film that makes you reach out for tissues at times. Tom Hanks is beyond amazing in this movie. His authentic Alabama accent makes you wonder if this is the Tom Hanks that you have seen in other movies. The things that actors do! He even won the Academy Award for Best Actor for this movie. Just like Di Caprio, Tom Hanks has been incredibly lucky to have been offered one wonderful movie after the other. But his hard work in each of those shows up and its a sin to not fall in love with him

October Sky

October Sky

An inspirational movie based on a true story, October Sky is about a boy named Homer Hickam, who risks everything he has for the sake of his dreams. The movie is based on the autobiographical novel written by Homer Hickam called Rocket Boys (FYI, October Sky is an anagram for Rocket Boys), a former NASA engineer. This movie will push you to reach your limits and make you believe in your dreams and moreover, in YOURSELF

That’s my list of critically acclaimed movies that I have watched. Have you watched these movies? If yes, do share your views on the same. Feel free to add other amazing movies you have watched too.
